On the 11th hour, of the 11th day, of the 11th month, Lift Ryde marked Armistice Day.
Our Prefects and Student Council members gathered outside of our school entrance to pay their respects. The commemoration was also streamed live to every classroom in our school, so that our remaining students and staff members could also pay tribute to those fallen.
Our service began a few minutes before 11am, with poems read by Student Council members Kai E (Year 10) and Daisy S (Year 9). Two poppy wreaths were then laid underneath the flagpole by Prefects Cruz M, Alfie B, Jathisa S and Daisy L (all Year 11).
Mr Ruiz then played The Last Post on the trumpet, whilst Prefects Riley A and Matilda E (Both Year 11) raised the flag. Our entire staff and student community then fell silent for two minutes at 11am to think about the lives lost to conflict over time, and the sacrifices they made.
Our 6th Form students and staff also gathered outside of their campus to observe the two minutes of silence, and lay their own wreaths in memory.
Key Stage 3 English lessons also focused on Armistice Day. Students analysed Wilfred Owen’s Poem, Dulce et Decorum est, and used this to inspire them to write their own creative piece linked to war. Above are some photographs of Miss Lane’s Year 8 English class working very hard and being incredibly respectful.
As our poppy flag flies over the school, we will remember those who gave their lives, today, and every other day.
Thank you to all of our students for the respect they showed during the event. We are very proud of your maturity.
We must also thank our wonderful Prefects, Student Council, and Mr Ruiz for helping us to commemorate Armistice Day so wonderfully. We are very proud to have you all representing us.
